Introduction

The Australian Association for Academic Primary Care (AAAPC) aims to promote and develop general practice as a creative, cooperative and mutually supportive discipline. In particular the AAAPC encourages the exchange of ideas and supports activities that will support career development within academic general practice. The AAAPC Travelling Fellowship Program is one way in which the Association can fulfil its objectives.

Aims of the AAAPC Travelling Fellowship Program

  • To enhance Australian academic general practice
  • To foster collaboration between Australian general practice researchers
  • To foster collaboration between academic departments of general practice
  • To provide assistance to members of AAAPC to undertake study leave within Australia

Size and duration of grants

Travelling Fellowships are offered at a maximum of $5,000 for a study trip of not less than 2 weeks duration. The funds are available to cover costs of travel to and from the host institution and to contribute towards accommodation costs. Airfares will be re-imbursed for the cost of an advance purchase economy airfare. Applicants should book the cheapest available online fare wherever possible. Travelling Fellowships will be offered in years where the Executive deem that sufficient funds are available. No more than 2 fellowships will be granted in any one year.


Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • be current financial members of the AAAPC and have held membership for at least 1 year before applying
  • be currently employed within the academic general practice community
  • have a written letter of offer from the Head of the host institution
  • have a written letter of support from the Head of their own institution
  • NOT have held an AAAPC Travelling Fellowship for at least 4 years

Purpose

The Travelling Fellowships are available for any purpose likely to meet the stated aims of the program. For example, an applicant may wish to travel to another institution to

  • initiate or continue a joint research or teaching project
  • undertake a mutually beneficial critical appraisal of the host department's teaching and research programs
  • deliver a teaching or research program in collaboration with the host department

Assessment process

  1. Short listing by Secretary using following criteria: Eligibility, purpose of trip
  2. Peer Review - short-listed applications will be reviewed by one member of the Executive and 2 State Representatives nominated by the President. The Review team will represent at least 3 States. Applications will be compared on the basis of the purpose of the trip, the track record of the applicant, the applicants demonstrated commitment to Academic general practice and their future potential.

Offers

The Secretary will inform the Applicants, in writing, of the outcome of the review process.


Submission of Applications

Applications must be typewritten in black. Minimum font size 11 point. The signed original plus 4 copies should be submitted to the Secretary of the AAAPC NO LATER THAN AUGUST 30TH each year.

Applications will be short-listed and reviewed. Successful applicants will be notified by September 31st.

Your application must include:

  • Name Contact Details (include email and fax)
  • Location of proposed study trip
  • Offer of invitation from host institution
  • Letter of support from head of your institution/department
  • Plain language summary of proposed study trip (100-300 words)
  • Itinerary - include a day by day account of your proposed activities during the fellowship (2 A4 pages maximum, table format is preferred)
  • Budget - include travel and accommodation costs
  • Outcome (300 words) - explain how your proposed Fellowship will benefit yourself, your institution and the wider AAAPC community
  • Curriculum Vitae - no more than 6 pages
  • Referees: include name and contact details of 2 professional referees
